Can a Paper Towel Really Do All That?

Admittedly, I’m no Einstein, but I love a good experiment. Especially one I can replicate at home since we had Bounty Paper towels and coffee cups.  I remember those old Bounty Paper Towel TV commercials where the waitress would wipe up a spill and show the Bounty Towel was tough enough to still hold a cup and saucer. Of course if I can remember that ad decades later, it must have made a lasting impression.  I’m sure I’m not the only person who tried this at home, right?  My lab assistants; ok my sisters, and I wet the towel and put a cup and saucer on the towel. EUREKA! It lived up to its promises

Decades later, and now the head of my own household, I try to spend our hard-earned dollars wisely.  In the name of saving a dollar, I’ve tried cheaper brands. This unintentional experiment taught me another lesson. Cheaper brands will do the trick for cleaning up kitchen blunders, spills and messes.  But I noticed that I didn’t actually have to use 2, 3 or more towels to take care of the problem like they want you to believe.  The bottom line, I was saving money. .

So after years of unofficial scientific experiments, here’s what I decided:  Brand name paper towels are a bit pricier (if that’s not a real word, let’s pretend it is for the sake of this article) than the other paper towels. I have since started buying my paper towels online, and mainly the recycled brown roll towels, especially in the garage.  I usually keep a roll in kitchen, another roll in the bathrooms (it’s more sanitary to use throw away paper towels than for everyone to dry their hands on the same terry towel-yuck).  I also keep paper towels in the car and that’s where the commercial grade roll towels really come in to effect.
